The Full Story
Once upon a time, a poor woodcutter lived near a forest. Every day he went to the forest, cut wood, and sold it in the market to earn a living.
One day, while he was cutting wood near a river, his old axe slipped from his hands and fell into the deep water. The woodcutter was very sad. Without his axe, he could not work and feed his family.
He sat by the river and began to cry.
Suddenly, a river goddess appeared from the water. She asked kindly, “Why are you crying, woodcutter?”
He replied, “I lost my axe in the river. Without it, I cannot earn my living.”
The goddess dived into the water and came back with a golden axe. She asked, “Is this your axe?”
The woodcutter shook his head and said, “No, that is not mine.”
She dived again and brought a silver axe. “Is this yours?”
The woodcutter shook his head again. “No, that is not mine either.”
The goddess dived once more and brought out the woodcutter’s old iron axe.
“Yes! That is my axe!” said the woodcutter with joy.
The goddess was pleased with his honesty. She said, “You are an honest man. I am giving you all three axes as a gift.”
